(A David psalm for Jeduthun. For singing.)
When my soul craves rest
I find it in God
He puts together
The pieces of my life.
He’s a sound foundation
And steel girder construction.
No earthquake can take me down.
And, boy, do I need it!
I’m like a much-abused gate
Taking blows from a battering ram.
Their goal is to burst me
Into splinters
With their word weapons.
Their fawning lips
Hide treacherous hearts.
So, listen up, my weary soul,
Find your rest in God.
He puts together
The pieces of my life.
He’s a sound foundation
And steel girder construction.
No earthquake can take me down.
And the rest of you, listen up.
Don’t stop trusting him.
Don’t stop pouring your hearts out to him.
He’s your true safe place.
We mortals add up to almost nothing.
The poor are a puff of wind,
Gone before it’s noticed.
The wealthy may have big bank accounts
But they themselves are just a string of zeros.
Don’t fall in love with wealth,
Wooing her by cheating and conniving.
For fickle money
Will leave you as quick as she can,
Leaving you with a broken heart.
God told me a truth in two parts.
First this: God’s unstoppable power is matched
By his unfailing love.
And then this: He serves everybody
With the dish they cooked.
